Detailed and atmospheric level design which takes you from swamps to high tech labs, sunny beaches to thunder storms, underground sewers and old mines.

Mattos world deviates from FarCry's in that Jack Carver is an agent for the CIA working on location, undercover. With some help from his friends he must foil the bad guys plot, blow up some stuff and get the girl, all in a days work.

I have to agree with redninja - Matto 4 was way over hyped and while it has some stunning new goodies in it (like the AI searching the tunnels with flashlights) - for the most part it is a dull indoor game with little activity outside. Far Cry was built for free roaming outside FPS! We FPS addicts spent so many years fighting "inside" or in fake outdoor locations where you couldn't go over there because it was just a picture. Then the Matto team makes their big finale and blows it with highly repetitive room to room 1990's style gameplay. I was very disappointed.

Yes eviltimes thanks The last level inside the complex,it was soooooooooooo "what the hell is all this c-ap".Boring very grey dark dank place,with more doors to open left and right,more doors than any other building in the world,and the last weapon,the so called super weapon,it was like somthing out of startrek,it should be somthing out of rambo type weapon lol lol

The Comments on Matto 4 are a good example of why a ratings or star system is useless. Anyone contemplating playing Matto 4 can read the comments here, the range of comments giving a good perspective on the merits and shortcomings of the game.

And we lost a lot of mods as well. I thought I had everything I wanted, but can't find some weapons mods. There were two nearly identical mods where you lost any remaining ammo in the clip when you reloaded a clip. This was truly painful with the rocket launcher and sniper rifle especially. And I know we're missing some of the older, silly stuff as well.

ahm, its build in in farcry but deactivated, you just need to activate it with a console command. (can't tell it here, have forgotten the command...)

Matto 4 dosnt stand a chance against sp mangoriver,that mod,is what far cry should be.To me sp mangoriver is the best mod ive ever played,more mercs,that even rambo would think twice about,boats,river,out in the open,and a garrison right at the end,never mind the plane that drops more mercs down,if you think your hard play it on nightmare level,you wont be going very far lol

Am I the only person who did enjoy playing this mod? I agree that there aren't many outdoor environments, but that doesn't make it a bad mod. Matto4 has an enjoyable story and interesting features and the scenery looks great. I enjoyed Matto4 and I still enjoy replaying it sometimes.
It's still a mod, not some kind of AAA game made by some kind of professional developer company.

i liked matto 4 very much! played it with 1.1 patch level, so no save spots was working, very intensive gameplay *g*

after i've patched farcry to 1.4 all savespots are working and i loosed nearly 90 percent of gameplay fun.

especiall the first map is extremely well designed, you have different ways and always hiding spots. this map have a pvcf map design rate 10/10. XD

regarding the indoor levels: for me it was the first big indoor game on farcry based, so i even enjoyed it too

Doesn't Matto4 have an installer? Just install it into the main Far Cry folder and then you can launch it via the shortcut on your desktop.

Don't get me wrong - there's a ton of great innovations and new stuff, in-jokes, etc. It's just the Matto Team really hyped this one, and then it was spectacularly late (from their own timeline) - remember, this isn't one person loosing months of sleep to create a map that works most of the time, this was a proven Team of guys who had made three previous sucessful map/mods.
I guess it goes back to the history of 3D First Person Shooters. Since the first successful 3D FPS game by Apogee (Future ID) Software (really John Carmack and John Romero) - Wolf 3D - (three floppies for your DOS 386 + 4 megs of ram! ) For many years after - even great games like the first Half Life (1998) - we players were stuck in hallways and rooms - no matter how pretty they slowly invented "skies" and "objects in the distance" - but it as all an optical illusion - you couldn't go over there because there was no "there" there! Face it - As much as we love Half Life we did spend all of out time inside the Black Mesa Lab.
Unreal in 1998 hinted at the promise of openness to come, but creating maps for it turned out to be too difficult for the home gamer, and it really never caught on in the onslaught of multiplayer that burst open afterward. At the time gaming writers foretold a sad death for single player games in the very near future. Ha! Even today, when all kinds of multiplayer games are occurring in their millions (even Scrabble on your smart phone) 24/7 - many more people are playing single player electronic games- from MS Solitaire to Portal.
Anyway, what I am trying to say is that the entire history of 3
D FPS was stuck indoors, mainly due to CPU/GPU limitations. Then a true breakthru: Far Cry (2004). A FPS that was designed from the ground up to be a real outdoor game. It's actually more difficult to create indoor environments - a 180 degree switch from all previous game (OK the big ugly outdoor multiplayer wargames were out there, but they were like giant free for all crap with no attractiveness for me.) Far Cry! You're the reluctant hero, you go any direction you want! Wow! I guess all that goes without saying, we're all at this website after all.
So what I'm trying to say is here was a massively hyped mod called Matto 4 and it's all indoors? WTF? It's still a cool mod and deadly as hell with lots of neat stuff and humor touches. But at the time...Grrr.

So much criticism for such a great work? This mod is near professional work, bar the amateurish voice acting. Very well balanced, very fun to play, the challenge on realistic is just right.

The best thing is the end fight, just pure epicness. I uploaded a clip of the end fight (on realistic) to youtube. Enjoy!

I'm playing this again. I god a small problem in Temple level. If I pick up(or touch) MP7 ammo, objective box will disappear.

Seems there's bug in the ammo script maybe.
Why don't you try to change ammo class of MP7 from MP7's ammo to SMG ammo and avoid collecting MP7 ammo?

Matto 4 Download gives "File Not Found".
Also links to Vet's Featured Downloads mostly don't work now. They used to.
That said, I'm so glad Tnlgg has kept crymods.net going. It's usually easier to do a fresh download of a map/mod, rather than search through own old HDDs for the file.
Lucky for me I have a lot saved, and found Matto download on an old drive.
A fair bit of Matto 4 gameplay is tedious for me, I don't like having to fight every inch of the way. Others love it though, eg following of Crazy Beach map.
I would rate Matto 4 as the best ever Farcry mod. Technical wizardry trumps any niggles about gameplay.
I'm not finished, just up to the drive thru the caves in the towtruck. One of the most memorable passages out of everything Farcry.
And very replayable, even if it is many years since my first time.
