I would like to propose a challenge: create a basic island with Jack Carver, vehicles, vegetation and destructible objects, using the Cryengine Sandbox Editor. If you can do more than this bare minimum, that will be really cool!
Deadline NOV 2010.
Open to elite mappers, nO0bs, and all in between.
If we come up with anything decent, Tnlgg might allow it into the Beta section of Downloads, which is currently empty!
NOTE: this is a challenge, not a competition.

My New Year's Resolution for 2005 was to make an sp_map.
About time I fulfilled it!
So I'm making a commitment here and now. However puny and pathetic, I will make a map this year!
I might make an idiot of myself as I have no skills in this area. Whatever...

Sooo...coupla hours later, I have an island, sandy beach, noon day sunshine, the skybox from Campaign Fort level,
grass, coconut palms, and wait for it - coconuts.

That wasn't so hard. Except the manual has a steep learning curve imo.
For instance page 9 says, "Underneath the Static Window is the Layer Mask Autogeneration Window."
Say wut?!?
Static Window? At least I can find the Rollup Bar now.

Come November I should have Forts, Elevators, sharks.

Maybe not...

I have read the first 30 pages of the manual, even though "manuals are for sissies", but this thing is more a case of pushing buttons until something works. And it has more buttons than an accordion!

Awesome idea VET.

Making sp levels is not that hard, everyone can do it,Sandbox Editor is easy.

Download the MOD SDK v1.3 or v1.4 & read Swoop & AEons Manual, its better explained than CryTeks Manual & easy to understand.

I hope till end of the year we will have a few new sp levels to play.

Heh, a quite good occasion to test my the noob power-mapmaker
Graphic model of a map to create not so it is difficult, it is much more difficult to write a script of events for a map... ... Absolutely without knowledge of language LUA.

Fun.

Is Editor compatible with Win7?

Okay I can create terrains fine but no vegetation - I am unable to see results.

I found the included manual but it's next to useless for noobs as there are no walk-throughs

hey, admin, post a link to the manuals
when those are not up to scratch I forget the idea to do levels!

Here is a small introduction the Cryengine Sandbox Editor. For no0bs by a no0b!
It shows how to open the Editor and examine the FarCry Campaign level "Archive".

1. Go to your FarCry root folder with Windows Explorer, open the bin32 folder, and find the Editor.exe file. It's a good idea to send it to the Desktop now. Give yourself a big silver "E" shortcut.
2. There is a standard Windows format here, so click File>Open and from the Levels window that opens up, double click on "Archive".
Double click on the "archive.cry" folder and load it into the editor. Wait a while until it loads, then click "Close" at the bottom of the error reporting window when it appears.

3. Double click where it says Perspective, and you will fill the screen with the perspective view. When you want to restore Map view, you just double click on "Perspective" again.

4. WAS and D are used to navigate. Press S to back up a bit.
5. Hold the right mouse button and use the mouse to look around. While still holding RMouse you can use the WAS and D to move around.
6. Position yourself close to the ground and press CTRL+G, and you are now in "Game Mode".
7. Press "F4" to enable No Clip and you can fly around.
8. Press ESC when you've had enough and close the editor. If you have fiddled with anything, make sure to close without saving your changes!

What I (WE) want is actually a walk-through type tutorial for the creation of a simple but complete map. Only then you can learn quickly and efficiently. I am not touching experimental.. see what you can find out
We have to learn the use of the editor in full
Inspecting a finished map is of no help.

VET Creates an Island in Ten Minutes.

Here is a small tutorial on creating a basic island.
In about ten minutes you can create a small FarCry island that you can load and view from the FarCry in-game console with the "\map Practice Island" command.
This follows the walkthrough on page 14 of the Editor Manual.
The manual v1.1 is available here at Crymods as a 6.5Mb Download:

clicky

1. Run the Editor.exe located in the FarCry Bin32 folder.
Select New from the file menu.
Name the new level "practice_island", or whatever.
Click OK.
NOTE: Level names must be a single word.
practiceisland = OK
practice_island = OK
practice island = NOT OK

2. Find the Terrain Toolbar. It is along the line that begins with the word "Mission".
NOTES:
i. Do not click on "Terrain" in the Top Line, or click the "Terrain Icon" in the Rollup bar. Yet.
ii. It is important to remember the difference between the Toolbar and the Rollup bar.
iii. If for some weird reason you don't have a Terrain Toolbar, right-click on a blank area of the toolbar at the very top of the page, and tick Terrain Toolbar.

3. Click on the terrain icon in the Terrain Toolbar. A terrain window will open up, filled with ocean.

4. Click the biggest brush (big black round dot)and make a medium sized grey/black/white blob in the middle of the ocean. If you are unhappy with your first effort, click on "Heightmap" and erase it. It is a good idea to have mostly greys and not too much black or white. White is mountains! Pure black is close to water level height (16) so make sure you have plenty of dark and light grey. A little bit of white is OK for now. I like a tear-drop shape, so I can get oriented and find North.

5. When you are happy with your blob, Click OK. This will return you to the Map and Perspective window. Double click on Perspective, as we don't need the map view. You should see some blue sky with clouds, and a bunch or red "Replace Me" tiles. That is your new island.

6. Hold down Right Mouse (RM) and use W,A,S and D to gain some height and look around.

7. In the File menu, click on "Generate Surface Texture". This takes a few minutes, and renders your island in the default green surface texture. Just go with all the default values for now.

8. In the file menu, click on "Export to Engine".

9. Click on "Save". This will save your map to the FarCry Levels folder.

10. There are two ways you can go for a walk on your island.
i. Use CTRL+RMouse to navigate down close to ground level. Press CTRL+G to gently drop to the ground. Now you can take a walk on your very own island.
ii. The other way is to open your level with the console from within the FarCry game.
Press ~ and type \map practice_island (or whatever) and it should load. You will probably spawn underwater so use F4 flymode to zoom up to the surface and locate your island.

That's it! Adding sand, grass, trees, a buggy, a camp fire and a spawn point for Jack etc are next. There is a walkthrough at the end of each chapter of the v1.1 manual explaining how.

Pretty neat, Hey!
My first attempt took three hours, not counting studying the manual.
The second took ten minutes.
Now see if you can make a second one in 5 minutes ... that is my personal best.

----oooOooo----

Most of us learned by taking a look at original maps to see how are the things done.

Like i said before read the Editor Manual by CryTek or Swoops & AEons Manual.

I can do some video tutorials for you if you want, just say what you want to know.

I am not responding to anything you asked.
The 10 minute island tute was planned a week ago.

There is a whole lot of info on mapping already on this site,
but the learning curve is steep.
I just thought some players, like myself, might eventually create a map.
If only they could just get a start on using the Editor!
So if even only one person makes themselves a little island with a camp fire and a buggy, I will be happy.
And if we get some new full scale sp_maps, I will be happier.

You have deliberately taken me out of context.
You asked for "a walk-through type tutorial for the creation of a simple but complete map."
You have posted that my 10 minute tute is "not what I asked"
I am pointing out to you that my tute was not a response to anything you had asked.

If you wish to twist my words and label me as "rude" then you have just crossed the line.
I am sensitive to personal attacks against any member here, myself included.

This topic, on the Sandbox Editor, is meant for all mappers, beginning and otherwise.
It is supposed to be encouraging and supportive.
You have filled it with spam, name-dropping and now trolling.

I recall an earlier post of yours.

There is only one thing dysfunctional on this forum.
Take your own advice, and be off!

Well, and at me something problems with island
I generated textures (Textures Button), activated them (Generate Surface Texture) and have received... It.

What is this a problem? It is a problem of my game?
Textures on other maps work correctly.

Hi Lahti, FCst1, glad to see you have your own islands!

@FCst1, you have successfully created a surface texture. Otherwise it would be all red "Replace me" tiles.
I see you have also managed a night sky!

So the problem is that this texture is not the one you were expecting.
Applying textures is a bit complicated, I can only refer you to page 15 of the v1.1 Editor manual:
#6. Create a texture layer
#7. Choose a layer texture
#8. Choose a surface detail

and #9. Set a height and slope mask.

I will try to get a short tutorial done on texturing.
